Audition Information

What can I expect at a drum corps audition?

Before the audition

  1. Preparation Materials
Most corps will send you an audition packet with exercises, music, and specific skills to prepare in advance. This could include:

    • Warm-up routines.

    • Scales or technical exercises.

    • Specific pieces or excerpts.

    • Choreography or movement instructions (for color guard or percussion).

  2. Physical Readiness
Drum corps demands high physical endurance. Be ready for:

    • Marching basics.

    • Conditioning exercises (e.g., running, stretching).

  3. Research the Corps
Familiarize yourself with the corps' style, history, and expectations. This shows your dedication and interest.

During the audition

  1. Check-In and Orientation

    • You'll likely register, meet staff and volunteers, and receive a schedule for the day.

    • There may be a group meeting to introduce the corps' philosophy and audition process.

  2. Section-Specific Auditions
You'll spend time with your specific section (e.g., brass, percussion, color guard). Expect:

    • Brass: Tone quality, range, articulation, and music excerpts.

    • Percussion: Rudiments, timing, sticking, and possibly sight-reading.

    • Color Guard: Flag, rifle, or saber techniques, along with dance basics.

  3. Physical Evaluations
Many corps evaluate your physical fitness through exercises like stretching, running, or simple drills.

  4. Ensemble Rehearsals
You'll likely participate in full ensemble or sectional rehearsals to assess how well you blend with the group and follow instructions.

  5. Individual Assessments

    • Playing or Performing: You may be asked to perform the prepared materials or sight-read.

    • Interviews: Some corps may have a short interview to gauge your personality, teamwork skills, and commitment.

  6. Feedback and Evaluation
The staff will evaluate you on:

    • Technique and skill level.

    • Adaptability to feedback.

    • Attitude, effort, and ability to work as part of a team

Post audition

  1. Callbacks or Contracts

    • You might receive a callback for further evaluation.

    • If successful, you may be offered a contract to join the corps.

  2. Next Steps

    • If you're offered a spot, you'll need to commit to the rehearsal schedule, financial obligations, and other requirements.

    • If not, many corps provide feedback to help you improve for future auditions.
